Why do power window systems fail?
Electric power windows are made of three basic mechanisms that could fail at any given time: the electric motor, the window regulator, and the switch. Most of the time power windows fail because of wear and tear or your vehicle has been vandalized. Most systems are designed to last 2-4 years depending on use. Thus, replacement parts are always readily available. Most power window fixes take about 2-4 hours.
How much will it cost to repair my power window?
Most automotive power windows fail because the window regulator cable either binds in the spool or busts. Almost all newer regulators are cable driven as opposed to the metal scissor lift mechanism of older vehicles. Since about the early to mid-1990s, all auto manufacturers switched to cable-driven regulators because of cost-effectiveness. The cost of these cable-driven power window regulators varies, some are sold with the electric motor as a sealed unit and some are available without the power window motor. The cost of labor to remove and replace any of these components is between $75 to $125. The cost of the power window parts varies much more, from $95 to upwards of $500 depending on the year, make, and model of your vehicle and the options it’s equipped with.
